Call me a sucker for big hair. I’m even a bigger sucker for music that is layered with cross cultural influences and history. The immigrant story is universal hence I connect with these French-Cuban twins, Ibeyi, who effortlessly mix the sounds of their ancestors from Africa to Cuba all the way to their new home in France. No matter where you land, you can’t forget where you came from.

Sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz were born in Cuba to famed and late percussionist Anga Diaz, of Buena Vista Social Club. They sing in English and Yoruba, a Nigerian language that their ancestors spoke prior to being in Cuba. Their mother is French-Venezuelan singer Maya Dagnino, whom also manages them.

Their song River was released last August and yes latepass on me for only hearing it now, but I came across the video and was riveted. I couldn’t pull away.
