The CFDA announced in March that they’ll be presenting Rihanna with a Fashion Icon award this June ‘for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory,” as noted by the CFDA’s CEO Steven Kolb.
RiRi has never shied away from risque fashion statements and recently she’s been seen not just front row at some of the most coveted fashion shows, but backstage with leading designers from Lanvin, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld to Balmain’s Oliver Rousteing whom she is friends with and has been seen partying with. This is access to heads of fashion houses that no other pop star can claim. Ever since her daring pixie haircut from her “Good Girl Gone Bad” era, the songstress has pushed the envelope with her look.
You’d be hard pressed to find a picture of her looking off. Always flawless, yet some are off put by her sometimes ratchet fashion choices. From see-through skirts, sheer tops and performing at the Grammys with her hair wrapped with pins (common bed time practice for black women. Present company included).
Along with her work with M.A.C. Viva Glam, there is no doubt Rihanna is a fashion force to be reckoned with. She is definitely a pop music icon, surpassing every musical accolade with chart topping singles, albums and videos.
However, there is no doubt that fashion snobs are turning their noses at this one. Little Miss Sunshine with a bad attitude shut down Paris Fashion Week this year, walking in with zero f*@ks and rub shoulders with folks whom may take offense to her unorthodox fashion picks.
I say, go ‘head girl. She works hard and although her musical and fashion choices may not always align with mine, she is an exciting artist to watch.
