When it comes to makeup, I feel like a bull in a china shop. There’s ambition, hope, belief that one day I will finally figure it all out, but often I either look way over done or I’m too lazy to go further than just some mascara. I have the aspiration to look flawless with the right foundation, winged eyeliner, popping lipstick and killer contouring. But just thinking about it all gets overwhelming.
So my new obsession has been watching makeup videos on YouTube. Other than learning new application techniques, hot colours to try out and best practices it’s also led to increasing my spending at Sephora. Will any of it result in me having my face looking sleek? Doubt it, but I’m going to have fun trying.
Here are some of the ladies on YouTube that I’ve been watching and taking notes from –
I love the easy breezy natural look that Chinutay pulls off. The first video of hers that I watched was this one on eyebrows and it made me improve my game. I’d switched to using the Brow Wiz pen from Anastasia Beverly Hills but when I saw this I reverted back to my matte powder. She uses Laura Mercier but I’m on a drug store budget so I use Quo. She’s based in Canada so the products listed are available here which is great.
MsRoshPosh’s makeup is too over the top for me but like window shopping, I like admiring how pretty it all looks when she completes her looks. I don’t have the patience she does in this video to create a dramatic cut crease with her eyeshadows. However for a night out, I do try to emulate the layering she does with the different shades to create a smokey eyed look.
Especially in the summer months, I like having a glow which can be achieved by using a good high lighter. The luminous look that I’ve always liked is on ItsMyRayeRaye. The easy steps she lays out in this video are simple to follow and it got me using the Urban Decay high lighter. The product is great and much cheaper than other illuminating powders on the market.
Although Desi’s skin tone is fairer than mine, I like watching her videos for her techniques. She uses steps that even I can follow. It’s not over the top or too vampy. Again, the videos I tend to gravitate more towards are those showing how to create a nude/neutral look that works for everyday.
No amount of makeup can beat having good skin. What got me interested in SonjdraDeluxe’s videos was how flawless her skin is. After seeing how she nourishes it underneath all that makeup made me realize that although it’s fun to play with makeup, taking care of your skin should be paramount. She’s a professional makeup artist based in Vancouver so again its great that a lot of products listed are available here.
My Natural Sistas
Why I like checking out these ladies page is because being Black women like me I know I can use the colour options they select. With others they may recommend a certain foundation, concealer, etc but that brand may not carry a hue in my shade. Although I don’t think she’s a makeup artist and her videos aren’t as in depth as the others, I like the shades used in relation to how they’ll work on me. I like checking My Natural Sistas out not only for their makeup recos but they’ve got great videos on maintaining natural hair.
Hope you enjoyed some of these videos. Let me know if you liked any or have some of your own that you follow.
