The life of an enigmatic and troubled musician seems to make great fodder for films lately. Academy award nominated Queen Latifah will be starring in an HBO film on May 16th as legendary blues singer Bessie Smith.
Latifah started rapping in the streets of Newark, NJ and soon became a Grammy award winning artist, and one of the leading female rappers of our generation. Her debut album ‘All Hail The Queen’ came out in 1989.
Of all the musicians who’ve made the transition into acting, Latifah’s is one of the most seamless one I’ve seen. Her stint as Khadija on FOX’s Living Single is one of my favourites. Her long list of TV and film appearances is extensive but her work has gotten her a Golden Globe award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Image Awards, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. She most recently hosted her own talk show, The Queen Latifah Show, which was canceled in 2014.
Looking forward to seeing the Queen reign over this role. And seeing Michael Kenneth Williams (aka Omar from the Wire and Chalky White from Boardwalk Empire) is a great bonus.
