In the 1980s in Chicago, a genre of music formed that to this day is played all over the world. House music. And yes, I’m dating myself with this because I definitely remember enjoying this era when disco died and abandoned warehouses turned into clubs where drum machines and repetitive rhythms ruled the dancefloor.
Step away from the idea of Euro house that it became when it crossed the Atlantic, but more the along the lines of the late Frankie Knuckles and Mr. Fingers’ ‘Can You Feel It?“, where you could hear the jazz and soul influence. House music was fun and you can hear glimpses of it now in mainstream pop music.
So when I heard Vic Mensa‘s ‘Down On My Luck’, it took me back to that time. Vic Mensa, only 21 years old, has been rapping for a few years and hails from Chicago, surprise surprise. His breakout song is catchy, oozes that classic fun filled house sound and the video is hilarious.
